Dr. Henri Grissino-Mayer
Specialities: dendrochronology, paleoclimatology, biogeography, Holocene environments, geographic though

Dr. Grissino-Mayer splits time between being a climatologist and being a biogeographer, and his primary research interests include the reconstruction of past environments using information from tree-ring data (dendrochronology).
His accomplishments include (1) the development of a 2,200 year long reconstruction of annual precipitation for the American Southwest, (2) the development of numerous reconstructions of fire regimes in both in the western and eastern U.S., (3) and using dendrochronology to help historical archaeologists more accurately chronicle cultural history.
He is the Director of the department’s Laboratory of Tree-Ring Science which has a well-respected international reputation for research, teaching, and service, and which has also appeared in numerous television documentaries that were featured, along with students from the laboratory, on the History Channel, Discovery Channel, and Court TV. He teaches both the Geography 131 and 132 courses, and teaches upper level courses in dendrochronology, quantitative methods, world soils, and natural hazards.
